2013 PINOT NOIR
ANDERSON VALLEY

2013 PINOT NOIR ANDERSON VALLEY

2013 was an ideal year in the Anderson Valley. It started very early and with steady temperatures through fall, we received a great sugar, acid, and ph balance that only happens in the best years. Picked on Sept 13th, with a 3.4 ph and 24.5 brix, this wine has bright strawberry, tart red cherry, and cranberry on a lively frame with just 15% new oak giving it just hints of spice.

2013 PINOT NOIR
NASH MILL VINEYARD, ANDERSON VALLEY

2013 PINOT NOIR NASH MILL VINEYARD, ANDERSON VALLEY

We are calling this our “last dance” with this vineyard as it was sold to someone else and we weren’t able to renew our contract past this vintage. We went out with a bang on this excellent vintage. This Pinot is 100% Pommard 2 clone, known for its complex aromatics and complexity.  The 2013 Nash Mill is beautiful with its lovely rose petal and forest floor aromas. The palate shows red cherry, raspberry, orange peel, woodsy earth and spice.  It is silky smooth and very long on the finish, with nice acidity, keeping the palate bright and fresh. We aged the 2013 Nash Mill on 3 yr old French oak barrels in order to let the beautiful characteristics of this vineyard shine. It is 100% Pommard clone, fermented in one ton bins, utilizing the indigenous and wild yeasts in the vineyard and winery. With only 100 cases produced and ¼ of it bottled in Magnums, we don’t have much of this to offer.

2013 ZINFANDEL
HUMBOLDT COUNTY

 2013 ZINFANDEL HUMBOLDT COUNTY

This years Humboldt Zinfandel is a combination of Marier and Pierce Ranch Vineyard fruit. These vineyards are organically farmed by meticulous growers. The vines have an average age of 10 years, head pruned, thinned to one cluster per shoot, and grown on steep slopes. Picked at an average of 23.5 brix with a 3.3 pH, this wine is not a huge monster Zinfandel. It clocks a respectable 13.8 alc. and is bright and pure with red cherry, strawberry and pomegranate with that old school spice/pepper I used to get in Zins of the mid-90s. This wine was aged on a combination of older French and Hungarian oak for 20 months.

2012 SYRAH- MARIER VINEYARD
HUMBOLDT COUNTY

2012 SYRAH- MARIER VINEYARD HUMBOLDT COUNTY

This is our second vintage of Syrah from this great site. It’s an incredibly steep (45 degree grade), south facing hillside at 1500 ft elevation, the highest vineyard in our region. The southern exposure is tempered by the cooler nights and mornings at this gorgeous site. This vineyard is planted to clones 470, 174, and 383 with Viognier intermingled in the rows for co-fermentation. This 2012 Syrah has the classic olive brine notes with lots of cracked black pepper to accompany the dark cherry, blackberry, and blackcurrant. It’s got wonderful natural acidity and is structured to last many years. It’s really fun to drink this right next to the Kimberly’s.

2011 SYRAH
HUMBOLDT COUNTY

2011 SYRAH HUMBOLDT COUNTY     2011 was an interesting year and a bit of an anomaly for us here on the Klamath River. It started out a month later than normal and ended with cool temperatures and intermittent rains. Though the grapes were picked with unusually low sugar levels, we received a similar amount of “hang time” as usual. It was picked Oct. 26th at an average of 22 brix, yet with a 3.5 ph and .6 TA. We used 100% whole cluster to add structure and complex aromas. Aged on mostly older French oak.  This wine has a classic nose of olive brine, iodine, and dark fruits. The palate is “olive and cherry infused beef blood , pumped through a rusty iron pipe”. It is classic cold climate Syrah and will surely appease the palates of Northern Rhone drinkers.

2013 ZINFANDEL, MARIER VINEYARD - WHOLE CLUSTER
HUMBOLDT COUNTY

2013 ZINFANDEL, MARIER VINEYARD - WHOLE CLUSTER HUMBOLDT COUNTY     The 2013 Marier Zinfandel was picked from steep sections of the Marier Vineyard. This vineyard has an average 45 degree grade making it impossible to get a tractor in. We had to hand cut small, two ft wide, “goat trails” through this head pruned vineyard in order to work and harvest it. This is the “Heritage Clone”, a selection from old vineyards in the Sonoma mountain area. Picked at 23 brix on Oct 16th, with a 3.25 ph we decided note to destem the fruit and ferment it 100% whole cluster. The decision to do this was based on the unusually ripe looking red and yellow color of the stems. The inclusion of the stems gave this wine a pronounced structure, giving it more body and length on the finish. It has a slightly woodsy nose accompanying the bright red fruits. The palate has nice pure red and dark cherry, with some cranberry and pomegranate. The whole cluster gave noticeable tannins and additional mouth feel. This wine was fermented with all native yeasts and no additions of any kind were made. We’re quite sure this will age very well.

2013 TRIBUTARY, MARIER VINEYARD
90% ZINFANDEL, 5% SYRAH AND 5% VOIGNIER
HUMBOLDT COUNTY

2013 TRIBUTARY, MARIER VINEYARD 90% ZINFANDEL, 5% SYRAH AND 5% VOIGNIER HUMBOLDT COUNTY      We took two of the last sections of the Zinfandel and co- fermented them with a bit of Syrah and Viognier. The Syrah adds color, structure, and spice, while the Viognier lends citrusy, floral aromatics, some density to the mid palate, and a juicy lift to the wine. We destemmed the fruit and added the ripest looking stems (about half) back in the fermentation bin to add extra structure and aromatics. We are pleased with the results. This nose has both black and red fruits with notes of orange blossom, honeysuckle, and spices. The palate is dark and dense with dark cherry, black raspberry, blackberry and cranberry. It is layered and rich with a beautiful lift from the Viognier and good natural acidity, giving a long structured finish. This was aged in three year old French and Hungarian oak barrels.

2012 SYRAH, KIMBERLY'S VINEYARD
HUMBOLDT COUNTY

2012 SYRAH, KIMBERLY'S VINEYARD HUMBOLDT COUNTY      Our pride and joy estate vineyard performed wonderfully in this great vintage. Picked on Oct. 24th, with a 3.47 ph, at 24.5,  we left this wine on its skins and stems for 60 days past dryness, instead of pressing it out right away. We did this to tame the big tannins this rocky vineyard typically produces.  This Syrah was  fermented all whole cluster with 10% Viognier. The nose is classic boysenberry, blueberry and black raspberry with a bit of lychee and honeysuckle flower from the Viognier. The palate is lush and full with the bright acids keeping the finish pumping for almost a solid minute. There is a phase… “iron fist in a velvet glove” and that describes this wine quite well. It’s tannins are big and structured but there is silkiness that makes the wine come off with a very smooth texture.  It was aged entirely on 5 yr old French barrels. This wine should age effortlessly for 15-20 or more years.
